Buffalo horn is made up of dense layers of fibres that have a very hard and durable surface, it resembles Cattle Horn greatly in its structure, however the walls are much thicker and more of the tip is solid.

Buffalo horn is nearly always entirely black and quite heavily ridged along the inner side curve; it is flatter and far more rectangular. When given a high polish buffalo horn develops an extremely hard surface and has to be one of the toughest natural materials.

About Genuine Water Buffalo Horn (Bubalus Bubalis) :

With the growing awareness for natural biodegradable material buffalo horn is one of best handle material. Buffalo Horn is a rough, hard and fibrous material having bow in several and most places. The skin of the fibrous horn is rough and hard. When flattened over a sand disc or belt sander and polished by soft muslin buff, it gives a distinctive shiny and highly lustrous finish.

The buffalo horn comes in a variety of colors, mostly available in black, black with some natural white streaks, brown, light and light white with few natural black spots. Buffalo Horn can also be dyed in various colors but the color penetration is not in whole. Indian water buffalo horn has a scientific/latin name Bubalus Bubalis Domesticus.

Availability Water Buffalo Horn :

Horns may differ from country to country depending upon the climatic condition, breeding and habitat of animals, in terms of quality and sizes.

India’s Water Buffalo Horn plays a very important role in the global trade. Although water buffalo horn is also available in ample quantity in other southeastern countries. Buffalo horn is harder than ox or cow horn. And with this property buffalo horn have very less possibility of breaking or being cracked as compared to ox or cow horn.

Working with Water Buffalo Horn :

Once the horn is collected it is kept in open air to get decompose and drying. After several weeks of drying in open air it is washed with water in huge tanks. The 40-60% of the total horn carries hollow part and 60-40% of the horn carries solid tips. Then as per requriements the horn is been cutted to separate the solid part (tips) & hollow part. Which is then sorted to get appropriate sizes and quality.

The horn is been cut by circular saw in several ways to produce the demanded material viz. with the center line of curvature of horn, sandwich cutting in two halves, small chips for making buttons and other tedious cuttings to get the sizes. The horn then undergoes a series of processes such as heating in oil, water, cooling, pressing, grinding over a sander belt and scraping to remove all flaws and discrepancies to get the semi-finished materials.

After processing it is been send to our quality control head for checking of exact dimensions, specifications, quality & color, ignoring the faulty pieces. The assorted material is then given a high lustrous and shiny polish by soft muslin cloth buff.

USES OF Water Buffalo Horn :

Varieties of articles are made from horn. These includes knife handles, revolver grips, buttons, buckles, brooches, plates for spectacle frames, razors, shaving brush handles, shoe horns, spoons, combs, boxes, picture frames, drinking horns, slabs/strips for furniture inlay, handcrafted decorative animals and birds in single piece of horns.
